The course covers descriptive as well as multiple-choice 11+ comprehension covering the following types of questions:
1. Selecting Information / Close Reading / Factual Questions for 11+ exams
Learn how to gather information quickly and easily. You’ll practice quick reading skills to identify appropriate answers. Use these skills to save time and energy during the exam, meaning you can focus on the longer questions.
2. 11 plus Vocabulary / Identifying Literary Devices
Sharpen your knowledge of literary devices, and expand your vocabulary through our practice of unusual and interesting synonyms for commonly used words. You’ll be able to easily identify examples of all the well-known literary devices. Recognising them will become simply second nature!
3. Analytical Questions
So, you know how to spot a metaphor or use of personification. You can tell your alliteration from your sibilance, no problem. Now, you need to know how to analyse these techniques. This course will help students understand why writers use these devices, and what makes them so effective. This module will also be useful for enhancing their creative writing skills.
4. Paraphrasing (understanding complex vocabulary)
Being able to put phrases into your own words is a crucial English skill. In this course, students will learn how to effectively paraphrase strange or unusual sentences/wording. Make your paraphrasing clear and accurate in this lesson.
5. Inference (Deduction)
The inference is a rudimentary English skill, and many authors rely on their readers’ ability to infer in order to make their writing creative and imaginative. They don’t want to have to tell you that a character is happy - we infer that by their actions, their words or the way they are described! You will learn how to read beyond the surface of the narrative, and to interpret the implicit meanings that lie beneath.
6. Close reading and inference combined together
This combined course will draw together the skills that we’ve been honing throughout the course. Understand how these skills can be used in partnership in order to produce answers that are accurate and clear. This is a chance to put your new skills into practice.
7. Multiple choice comprehension exam techniques
You’ve made it to the end! Our course helps students to tackle the tricky multiple-choice comprehensions. We will support you in learning how to read carefully and develop a precise and thoughtful elimination process for answering multiple-choice questions.
