Since 2014 we have prepared students for entry to top independent and private schools. In that time one pattern has been consistent: it is not arithmetic that costs marks in independent school 11+ maths papers. It is multi-step word problems, non-standard algebra and advanced geometry, sat under time pressure.

These papers ask for more than a correct answer. They ask a child to structure a complex solution clearly, spot the trap built into the question, and still finish the paper. Most children have never been taught to do those three things at once.

The timing matters. Some children sit their ISEB Pre-Test in October. Several senior schools close registration on 12 October. The written papers in January are fourteen weeks away, and most of December disappears into mocks and Christmas. This half of term is the last clear stretch your child gets.
