Leicester Grammar School: an all-inclusive guide!

First things first, Leicester Grammar School (despite its slightly confusing name) is a fee-paying independent school, NOT a state-funded grammar school. If you’ve searched ‘grammar schools near me’ or ‘grammar school in Leicester’ and landed here, this is probably not what you’re looking for! Please read on if an independent school interests you!

How much competition is there for Leicester Grammar?

The school is popular, and no one (not even those from the junior school) gets a free pass; every prospective student must sit the entrance exam. However, over half of the students admitted each year do come from the counterpart school, Leicester Grammar Junior School, as well as around 20 from the Year 6 prep class ran by the school.
It is worth noting, then, that if your child does not fall into one of these categories (or perhaps even if they do) and is likely to achieve borderline test scores, they may be invited to interview before a place is offered. If you have any queries, be sure to email the Leicester Grammar School admissions officer listed at the beginning of this page.

Is Leicester Grammar definitely the perfect choice?

Here at PiAcademy, we understand that this is a big decision. There are lots of Leicester schools – why should you choose Leicester Grammar? You need to be totally informed and have thought everything through. Hopefully, the following points will help...

The primary consideration here may be financial. Leicester Grammar is an independent school and requires the families of students to pay fees. The school is also co-educational.

So, when deciding whether this is the school for you, consider the following:

  • Would you prefer a co-educational school to a single-sex school?
  • Are you looking for a religiously oriented school?
  • Do you want to pay, or are you looking for a state-funded secondary education? (If the second, LGS is not for you.)
  • How far from home can your child travel to school each day? Are you situated in Leicester UK?

And these are just some of the considerations that will go into your decision. The most important thing is to get a feel of the school and see whether you and your child like it; attend a Leicester open day to get the most authentic picture of LGS. (The next Leicester Grammar School open day is on 10th October; keep updated by following their social media or reading their website!)

Leicester Grammar School Admissions Process:

To get into LGS, students are required to give a reference from their previous school, a registration fee, provide their birth certificate, and complete 3 exam papers. Details on the Leicester Grammar school 11+ age exam and how to apply are as follows:

  • Tuesday 5th January 2021, there will be one paper in the morning and one in the afternoon
  • You must apply to take the LGS entrance exam (devised by the school themselves) by Friday 11th December 2020

How to register for Leicester Grammar School Entrance Exams:

  • To register, you must complete the application form found on the school website. (If you have any trouble doing so, contact the admissions team via the details listed at the beginning of this article!)
  • You are also required to pay a £75 non-refundable registration fee

How to prepare for the LGS 11 plus entrance test

Leicester Grammar expects top-performing students, and so their pretest is quite testing! But not to worry, you can get your child prepared for the test following our simple tips:

  • Pay attention to the exam pattern listed previously and focus on these subjects – remember: different schools test different things, so if your child is doing taking more than one entrance exam, they may focus on different areas
  • Practice! Whether this is by using Pi’s resources to work on specific weaknesses, or by doing timed test practices, anything will be invaluable

Please see the links below for our highly recommended resources which include lots of useful and free 11 Plus (11+) past papers download -

How they beat the masses!

  • Hire a private tutor. Lots of other students will be getting advice from such tutors who have helped other students pass the exam before. Experience with the test will make all of the difference
  • Another tip: perhaps you may want to visit the school website and get a head-start on their reading list, to give your child an edge! ( Recommended Reading List )
