Maidstone Grammar School 11+ Exam Dates

  • Registration for the Kent Test for children due to start secondary school in September 2024 will open on Thursday 1 June 2023 and close at midnight on Monday 3 July 2023. We cannot accept late registrations.
  • Thursday 7 September 2023 for children who go to school in Kent
  • The weekend of Saturday 9 September 2023 for children who go to school outside Kent.
  • Kent Test result will be emailed to you after 4 pm on Tuesday 18 October 2023

Maidstone Grammar Schools 11+ Exam Styles

  • The first test is comprised of 2 multiple choice papers designed to test English and Maths, both of which will take 1 hour.
    • There is a 5-minute practice exercise followed by a 25-minute test per section.
    • The English section involves a comprehension exercise and some additional questions designed to test literacy skills. For example, the questions may contain a sentence with a word missing or students may be asked to spot mistakes in a sentence.
    • The Maths section involves questions covering topics taught up to the commencement of year 6.
  • The second test is a reasoning paper the duration of which is approximately 1 hour. It includes both the practise sections and questions.
    • It contains a verbal reasoning section (the ability to think using symbols and words), a non-verbal reasoning section (the ability to think about the relationship between patterns and shapes), and a spatial reasoning section (the ability to manipulate shapes and space in your head)
    • Verbal reasoning consists of a 10-minute practice test and 20 minutes for the actual test
    • Non-verbal and spatial reasoning are split into smaller timed sub-tests, lasting approximately 4-5 minutes each
  • There will also be a writing exercise that will not be marked but may be used by a local headteacher panel as part of the headteacher assessment stage of the process.
    • Students are given 40 minutes for the writing task which is inclusive of 10 minutes of planning time.
