What is the competition like for entry to SGS?

Being the only Grammar School in its area of West Sussex, SGS is inevitably oversubscribed... Therefore, it is vital that if you wish for your child to attend Steyning Grammar, you must apply with the school as your first preference by the deadline. (You are unlikely to get in if your application is late!)

How to choose the right school in West Sussex...

Choosing a secondary school for your child is an undeniably difficult task! We know that you want to find the perfect school, the one that feels right for you... So you need to be informed about all of your options.
In the area of Steyning, and more generally, West Sussex, there are a lot of options to choose from – you have a lot of choices to make. You need to choose whether you will go for a state or independent school, co-education, or single-sex, whether you’ll put distance or league table ranking first...
For many, the choice between state and independent school depends on whether the child will be able to go to grammar school. What is a grammar school? A selective but state-run secondary school. (Sounds brilliant, doesn’t it? Now you’re probably wondering, ‘where are all of the grammar schools near me?’) Attendees to grammar schools are decided through the 11-plus exams held at said schools. In and around Steyning, West Sussex, there are lots of independent schools, as well as many state schools. However, unlike the wealth of grammar schools in London, for example, Steyning, United Kingdom, has just... one: the Steyning Grammar School, often shortened to SGS. With only one school to apply to, the 11-plus exam may seem even more daunting than usual, especially if you and your family are new to it... Don’t worry! For top tips to get you started and help to navigate the 11-plus examination, look at our article on it under the ‘advice’ tab of PiAcademy’s website.
To help you make all of these difficult choices from an informed position, this article will quickly and simply take you through the differences between state, grammar, and independent schools, before looking more closely into Steyning Grammar.
As you will have gathered, there are two types of State-run secondary schools. Grammar schools which choose their students based on academic ability (discerned by the 11-plus exams) are fewer in numbers, as a law has been passed stating that no new Grammar schools can be opened. However, the currently remaining Grammar schools have been given the right to maintain their status and employ selective admissions processes. The other State school option is a comprehensive school; comprehensive schools are non-selective, and admissions are based on criteria such as feeder schools and catchment areas.
Independent schools are privately funded (by fee-paying students), and can be as selective as they wish in their admissions process - there will often be multiple tests as well as admissions interviews. Many independent schools are also boarding schools, so fees will also cover living expenses for pupils during term-time.
As mentioned previously, each of these types of schools can be found throughout the UK, with all three having players in West Sussex... But SGS school is the only option if you’re tempted by a grammar school.
