  • As a designated State Grammar School, all boys must meet Suttons required academic criteria to be considered for a Year 7 place.
  • Upon completion of the 11 Plus (11+) exam, the school ranks candidates and subsequently allocates places purely based on high academic performance.
  • Highest priority in oversubscription for entry to Year 7 will be given to those whose statement of special educational needs (SEN) or Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan names the school, and to looked after or previously looked after children, subject to meeting the necessary requisite academic admissions criteria.

11 Plus Entry Requirements for Sutton Grammar School

Pupils passing the SET will be invited to sit second stage tests in English and Mathematics, otherwise known as the 11 Plus (11+) entrance exam. This will be conducted before the Autumn term end. Scores will be standardised following which they will be aggregated, together with the SET marks, which enables the ranking of candidates. As the testing is competitive, only the first one hundred and twenty-four in rank order will be offered places. This adheres to the parental preference under the Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme.
If the aggregate standardised scores tie for two or more candidates, the final rank order will be determined using performance in the Mathematics paper, then, if required, the creative writing, followed by the English multiple choice, and then the SET.

  • English, Paper 1: Reading and Understanding (45 Minutes)

Part one of the English paper affords candidates 45 minutes in which their reading comprehension skills are tested via long answer and multiple-choice answer type-questions. Possessing vocabulary strength and understanding inference-based reasoning are of utmost importance in this part of the test.

  • English, Paper 2: Writing (5 Minutes Planning + 15 Minutes Writing)

Part two of the English paper takes the form of an essay. It demands a 5-minute planning process followed by essay construction on a topic specified in the question sheet. Both originality and accuracy of writing are assessed in this part of the test. Candidates are given an essay title or an excerpt or poem from which they are to extract ideas in the reading handout and develop them into a story or a description of their own.

Punctuation, spelling, and grammar are of paramount important here. Critically, candidates are evaluated on how well they articulate and present their thoughts, and of course how captivating the content is.

Part two of the test includes numeracy, problem statements, as well as questions pertaining to shape and space. Such questions should be widely available to students preparing for stage two and level five. The later questions in this section may include portions from level six as well.
