Canford School Year 9 (13+) Exam Dates
VISIT AND REGISTRATION
After visiting the school, the submission of a completed registration form and fee secures a place on our Admissions List, known as the 'Headmaster's List. It is advisable to register for Canford as early as possible.
HEADMASTER'S LIST PRE-ASSESSMENT
The school will be in touch ahead of time to ask parents of registered children to confirm that they wish to sit the ISEB test. This is sat at prep schools (or at Canford for those not at a prep school) Those that meet the required standard are invited to Canford for a pre-assessment day in Year 6 or Year 7. This consists of a mixture of activities, tests and informal interviews (please see graphic below for possible pre-assessment entry options).
OFFERS OF PLACES
The number of places available by this route will vary from year to year but over recent years about 65% of those who attended Headmaster's List assessments were later offered conditional places.
LATE AVAILABILITY
The door is seldom closed, so if you are not offered a place immediately, it does not mean that one won't become available later on. The Registrar is happy to advise you on the current position at any stage.
- For entry at Year 9 or 13+, the child has to go through two stages of pre-tests where there are four options of the pre-assessment timeline.
- The child can take ISEB Pre-test at year 6 in Autumn and Summer and at Year 7 in Autumn and Spring
- Then Headmasters List Day comes out according to the time of the year your child has taken the exam.
- Then the outcome of the exam comes out.
- In the year 8 final stage they can go for one of the four entrance tests:

- Common Entrance: The ones not sitting for the Academic Scholarship and are at a prep school can prepare for Common Entrance.
- Canford Assessment: For those not sitting the Academic Scholarship and not at a prep school can prepare for Common Entrance.

Canford School Year 9 (13+) Exam Styles
- Applicants who have registered for Year 9 placements undergo a two-stage pre-assessment process, which they can complete in Year 6 or 7.
- Year 6 & 7 procedure
- Stage 1 : ISEB common pre-test taken at current school (Autumn)
- Stage 2 : Pre Assessment day at Canford (January/February)
- Outcome (Before Easter)
- ISEB is an online examination commonly utilized by numerous secondary schools for students in Years 6 and 7. It comprises multiple-choice questions in the subjects of Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English, and Mathematics.
- For candidates applying after the pre-assessment period has closed, school will organize late entrance tests in English, Maths, and Verbal Reasoning. Additionally, school will require a satisfactory reference from your child's current school and will schedule an interview with a senior member of our teaching staff.
- For those whose first language is not English, there is an additional EAL (English as an Additional Language) test available.
- As an alternative, children can choose to take the Academic Scholarship exams in March of Year 8, even if they do not currently have a placement.
