Students will take part in several age-appropriate activities designed to demonstrate a range of understanding, skills, and attitudes to learning with the emphasis being on enjoyment. A parent or carer is asked to stay on site whilst the assessments are taking place, refreshments will be provided.
James Allen's Girls School 7+ Exam Dates
- Registration for 7+ entries to JAGS for a September 2024 start, will open on Monday 4 September 2023.
- The school's deadline for submission of a registration form is 4 pm on Friday 10 November 2023.
- 7+ candidates will be invited to an assessment morning on Thursday 8 January 2024.
- Girls who have done well in the entrance examination are invited back for an interview during the week beginning 22 January 2024.
- Parents will be advised of the outcome of the second round on Friday 2 February 2024 and will have a week to accept these offers.
- Offers must be accepted by midday 9 February 2024.
James Allen's Girls School 7+ Exam Styles
- The children are assessed in English (a written comprehension and creative writing test lasting approximately 30 minutes each), mathematics (the test is based on the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 Programme of Study and will last approximately 60 minutes), and reasoning (this is a computer-based, cognitive ability test which lasts approximately 50 minutes.) Applicants will, in addition, participate in some fun group activities.
- Following the initial assessment morning, selected candidates are called for the second round of assessments which include a 1:1 reading assessment as well as an interview with Ms Stack during which applicants complete a further short mathematics test.

James Allen's Girls School 11+, 13+ Exam Styles
All 11+ and deferred 13+ candidates will additionally sit the ISEB Common Pre-test in place of the school's usual entrance examination. State Primary school applicants, and candidates coming from private junior schools, will sit this test on one of two dates in early January: Wednesday 6, and Thursday, 7 January 2024. Preparatory applicants will this at their current school at some point during November, December, or early January, exact date to be determined by their school. The entrance examination for 12+, 13+, and 14+ Chance Vacancy candidates will be on Monday, 8 January 2024.
Each visit will consist of a one-on-one interview with a Senior Leadership Team member and a short creative writing task. In addition to this, all candidates who apply will be invited to sit the Independent Schools’ Examination Board’s (ISEB) Common pre-test, which is age-standardised and consists of online multiple-choice papers in Mathematics, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
