King’s College School 7+ and 8+ Exam Styles

    • Entrance Examination: About 300 boys will take this exam. The seven-plus exam will be held in November. Examinations are designed to provide an understanding of current levels and to gauge potential. Whilst they do not have a set or guaranteed pass mark, boys are advised to be aiming for 70% or above in each paper, and scores should be relatively consistent across all papers.
    • Listening Test: The seven-plus listening test is 25 minutes long. Candidates are asked to listen to a recording and then follow a set of instructions based on what they have heard. Last year’s listening test comprised of some instructional questions about a hippo – eg underline the picture of the hippo with three spots.
    • English Test: The English paper is 45 minutes and comprises both comprehension and creative writing section. A previous King’s seven-plus English paper asked candidates to write a story based on a picture cue of a girl with a scooter.
    • Reasoning Test: The reasoning paper asks both verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions. This year children were asked to look at a picture and answer questions about it.
    • Mathematics Test: The maths paper is 45 minutes long and gets progressively harder. Areas that are covered include: Number and the Number System (counting, place value, ordering, estimating, rounding and fractions); Money, Measures, Shape and Space (this year children were asked to draw pictures of hexagons); Basic Calculations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing two digit numbers); and Problem Solving (two and three-step questions using a variety of techniques to show a child’s application of knowledge.)
