Marlborough College 13+ Exam Styles

  • The selection at 13+ is based on a combination of the Head’s reference from a child’s current school, performance at an interview during an assessment day and ISEB Pre-Tests results. A majority of applicants will be assessed in Year 6 and approximately 70% of places will be allocated. Those who are successful in gaining a College place offer are most likely to gain a place in their first choice of the boarding house. A smaller intake to the College will be considered in Year 7 with approximately 25% of places being awarded at that time. The remaining 5% will be allocated in Year 8.
  • Entry assessment:  Enrolled applicants will be invited to an assessment day which takes place during the Lent term of Year 6 (or the Lent term of Year 7 or Year 8 for later applications).  The College aims to make the entry assessment day as pressure-free as possible.  On the day there are two short writing tasks (no preparation required), an interview with a housemaster or housemistress, an interview with a boarding house tutor and some informal group activities.
  • Common Entrance: Children with an A list place will sit Common Entrance Examinations in the summer term of Year 8. School is fully aware that a number of their feeder schools do not prepare their children for these exams and these children will be asked to set a minimum number of papers. The results will be used to determine the children’s sets on arrival at the College but a careful note will be taken of those children who have not been prepared for the exams. Those who have succeeded in being awarded an academic scholarship will not be required to sit the Common Entrance Examinations.

School Catchment Area Criteria: Parents need to check the latest updated information on the school website.
