Finding a Grammar School for your child in Surrey

It can be a daunting task finding the right high school in Surrey for your child, and if this is a choice you are currently making, you will likely know you have many options facing you.
More often than not, secondary schools in the UK education system are non-selective state schools (sometimes referred to as the comprehensive system). Yet there are other types of state-funded secondary schools out there, such as free schools and grammar schools.
Free schools are open to pupils of all ability levels and are not run by local authorities; this gives them greater control over how they do things, which many parents and teachers see as an educational advantage. Grammar schools, meanwhile, are academically selective schools- they test applicants using an entrance exam called the 11 Plus. As a result of this, many grammar schools are some of the highest-achieving institutions in the country, statistically achieving far higher results than the majority of comprehensive schools. However, with only 163 grammar schools in England, places are usually hotly contested, and many bright young applicants are turned down as a result of oversubscription.
For reasons like these, many parents are interested in exploring an alternative to state schools in England: the independent sector. Independent schools charge fees and, like the state grammar school system, typically use an 11+ exam for entry, allowing them to maintain a high academic calibre. One of the leading independent day schools in the UK is Reigate Grammar School in Surrey; read on to find out more.

Reigate Grammar School’s Exam Results

RGS’ recent A-Level and GCSE results are summarised below.

  • A-Levels: 95% of RGS pupils in 2019 received offers from Russell Group, Oxbridge, or medical school offers thanks to a record-breaking set of A-Level results. Two-thirds of grades were at A* and A, and 90% were at A* - B. The grade profile of the average pupil was AAA.
  • GCSEs: In 2019, RGS achieved its highest ever GCSE results, with 68 students achieving 10 GCSEs at 8 or higher. Almost 9 out of 10 grades were 9 – 7, and over a third of all grades were 9.

The Reigate Grammar School Fee Structure (September 2022)

  • As a result of the global economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Reigate Grammar School governors agreed not to increase school fees for the Autumn Term of the Academic Year 2021/22. The fees from September 2020, therefore, remain unchanged at £6,380 per term for the First and Second Forms and £6,450 per term for the Third to Sixth Forms. Fees will increase from 1 January 2022 to £6,580 per term for the First and Second Forms and £6,660 per term for the Third to Sixth Forms.
  • A ‘Fees in Advance’ scheme reduces fees if made in an advance lump-sum payment

The Reigate Grammar School: An Overview

Established in 1675 by Henry Smith as a school for impoverished local families, Reigate Grammar School (RGS) today has a roll of around 1300 pupils. In the 20th century, it remained free to attend until 1976, when it converted to independent status as a result of Labour government reforms. In 1993, the school became fully co-educational.
Notably, in January 2016, the school became the first independent day school in the UK to achieve an “Exceptional” rating from the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The accompanying report highlighted RGS’ excellent quality of teaching, its success in developing the talents and abilities of all its pupils, and its fostering of intellectual independence. In the words of headmaster Shaun Fenton, Reigate students “will flourish in our care, their self-esteem will grow, and they will become a success story for themselves, their family, and their school.”
Reflecting this ethos, Reigate has long enjoyed a reputation for academic excellence, frequently achieving high status in national league tables. In 2019, it both upheld and exceeded this track record by attaining its highest ever results at both A-Level and GCSE. Please read on for more details about Reigate Grammar School.
