Rugby School 13+ Exam Dates

AT 13+ (YEAR 9) Boarding Entry:

  • School temporarily close school lists for new applications between mid-October and April of Year 7 to enable the school to carry out this first wave assessment process. If you apply after school lists have closed, the school will ask you to fill in the school Waiting List Registration form so the school can then consider you for places that may become available.
  • Whilst the current exceptional circumstances exist school will be using remote assessment for later applicants for any spaces which may become available for entry in September 2024
  • NB: For entry in September 2024 and beyond – registration will close in October of Year 7 with interviews than in January and February

AT 13+ (YEAR 9) Day Entry:

  • First, identify which of these three categories describes where your child is currently at school:
    • Primary school
    • Local prep school

  • APPLYING FOR A PLACE AT BILTON GRANGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL FROM A LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL
    • FOUNDATION AWARD ENTRY TO BILTON GRANGE 2023 CONTINUING TO RUGBY SCHOOL IN 2025
      • Applications should be made by: 4 January 2023
      • Academic tests will take place: Thursday, 26 January 2023
  • APPLYING FROM A LOCAL PREP SCHOOL ENTRY TO TOWN HOUSE (BOYS) AND SOUTHFIELD (GIRLS) IN 2025
    • Applications should be made by: 4 January 2023
    • Assessment will take place: Thursday, 26 January 2023
  • APPLYING FROM A LOCAL SECONDARY SCHOOL TO ENTRY TO TOWN HOUSE (BOYS) AND SOUTHFIELD (GIRLS) IN 2025
    • Applications for entry, the Foundation Award or the Academic Scholarship (Local) Award should be made by: Thursday, 2 February 2023
    • Assessment will take place: Thursday, 3 March 2023

Rugby School 13+ Exam Styles

AT 13+ (YEAR 9) Boarding Entry:

  • 20 to 30-minute discussion to help us assess academic ability. Comprehensive report and the most recent verbal reasoning test (VRT) score from their current school.
  • Pre-interview questionnaire and during the assessment they will be interviewed by a Housemaster or Housemistress.
  • Once place is offered, the next step is to pass either Common Entrance (with an average of at least 55 per cent) or meet school entrance requirements in English and maths for children whose schools do not prepare for Common Entrance, or to meet school entrance requirements in the Academic Scholarship examinations.

AT 13+ (YEAR 9) Day Entry:

  • Information for Applicants for Day Entry into Year 9 who are at schools that transfer at the end of Year 6.
    • Continuation Awards are made in partnership with Bilton Grange School or Spratton Hall School. They offer funded day places at a local preparatory school for Year 7 and Year 8 and then entry as a day student to Rugby School in Year 9, conditional on performing well in Common Entrance at the end of Year 8.
      • Applicants for Continuation Awards will sit three academic tests
      • 45 minute 11+ verbal reasoning paper
      • 15-minute freewriting exercise
      • 60-minute maths paper (National Curriculum Key Stage 2: Year 6)
      • The school will also request a reference from the applicant’s current school and they will be Interviewed. Prior to this, the school will ask each applicant to complete a short interview questionnaire.
  • Information for Applicants for Day Entry into Year 9 who are at schools that transfer at the end of Year 8.
    • Assessment for these applicants takes place at Rugby School in February of Year 6
    • 20 to 30-minute discussion to help us assess academic ability. Comprehensive report and the most recent verbal reasoning test (VRT) score from their current school.

  • Information for Applicants for Day Entry into Year 9 who are NOT at schools that transfer at the end of Year 8.
    • Assessment will comprise tests in verbal reasoning, English, mathematics and science. These will be based on the National Curriculum. Applicants will also be interviewed and we will request references from the current school.
