In the assessment process, there are three distinct tests covering Mathematics, English, and Verbal Reasoning. These tests are sourced from GL Assessment, and we utilize their specialized 11+ entry exams exclusively. Each of the test papers is structured as multiple-choice questions and is accompanied by separate booklets for questions and answer sheets. These admission papers undergo standardization using a sample of students that accurately represents the children taking these exams. GL Assessment also offers complimentary materials for familiarization and practice, which are available for download at this location: click here

English (45 minutes):
The 11+ English assessments evaluate English skills in accordance with the newly implemented National Curriculum, which is typically taught in schools up to the beginning of Year 6. The assessed areas typically encompass elements of reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Mathematics (50 minutes):
The 11+ mathematics assessments align with the new National Curriculum for mathematics and encompass a range of curriculum topics commonly taught in schools up to the start of Year 6. These assessments typically cover aspects related to numbers, measurement, geometry, and statistics. Some questions may require the application of existing mathematical skills to solve novel mathematical problems.

Verbal Reasoning (50 minutes):
Verbal Reasoning (VR) primarily involves logical thinking with words. This involves tasks such as word generation, word usage, and identifying relationships between words. Certain VR question types also entail logical reasoning with letters and numbers; it's important to note that these question types do not test mathematical knowledge but instead employ letters and numbers as symbols to predict, for example, a sequence or relationship.

  • There are two exams: Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. GL Assessment standard papers are used for both tests.

    • The Verbal Reasoning assessment measures a pupil’s verbal skills and is produced by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER). In effect, it demonstrates the pupil’s ability to employ logic and reason in the English language. Students are given a practice paper first, during which they can ask questions and seek assistance with the answers. Following this, they complete the test paper. A raw score is given, which is standardized according to a national scale relating to age. They are normally distributed with a mean of 100; so the national average Verbal Reasoning Quotient (VRQ) is 100.
    • Where a student has specific needs, for example, the use of a laptop or extra time, this can be catered for by providing supporting documentation is provided to the school.
  • An interview will also take place before any offer can be made. If the offer of a place is made, acceptance paperwork and a deposit are sought to secure the place for eventual entry.

Review for School
C Nicholas

Our son has attended St James since reception and it would seem to us that he has loved every day so far, he is now in Year 5. We have such peace of mind with the knowledge that he is happy at school, our son loves the sport and is lucky enough to participate in sport on a daily basis. The teachers have been supportive, communicative and encouraging.
