1. Train Timetables and 11+ Exam
Timetables show a schedule for things to happen. For example, bus timetables, train timetables, or TV show timetables. Train timetables tell you when the train will arrive or both arrive and depart from a station. Train timetables are usually expressed in either 12-hour or 24-hour times. In the 11+ exam, they usually ask you to identify the correct train timings, the time the train will take to complete the journey or some mix of these two.
For example, here is a part of the timetable of a train.
To calculate the time we subtract the time of one station from the other station's timings. So the time taken for the train to travel from Westville to Gold City is
09:10 - 08:50 = 20 min
1.1 Solved Examples:
Example 1:
The table below shows a part of the schedule of a train.
How long does the journey from Burnley to Sidcot take?
Solution:
As the train departs at 1200 hours and reaches Wester at 1330 hours, so time taken will be
1330 hours - 1200 hours = 1 hour 30 mins
Example 2:
The table below shows a part of the schedule of a train.
It is a 10-minute walk from Jason's house to Burnley station and a 5-minute walk from Wester to his dorm room at his college. Work out when Jason will arrive at his dorm room if he leaves his house at 1145.
Solution:
He leaves his house at 1145, and in 10 minutes he will reach Burnley station (at 11:55). The train departs from Burney at 1200 which will take him to Wester at 1330. After reaching Wester station he will go to his college dorm room which will take 5 min more. So the total time taken is
= 15 min + (1330 - 1200) + 5 min = 15 + 90 + 5 = 110 min or 1 hour 50 min
Now I recommend you to go through all the practice questions, previous year's questions, and the quiz.
