1. What is a trapezium?
A trapezium is a two-dimensional quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides. The parallel sides are indicated using small arrows.
1.1 Properties of trapezium
- A trapezium is a two - dimensional shape.
- Trapezium has only one pair of parallel lines to each other.
- Parallel lines of a trapezium are called bases.
- Sum of all the interior angles of the trapezium is always 360°.
- For an isosceles trapezium, non-parallel sides are equal in length.
For the isosceles trapezium shown ABCD shown above, AB and CD are parallel Sides, and non-parallel sides AD and BC are equal.
1.2 Perimeter of Trapezium
Perimeter of the trapezium is the sum of all sides. For the trapezium shown above with sides as a, b, c and d,
Perimeter = a + b + c + d
1.3 Area of Trapezium
The area of a trapezium is the amount of space inside the trapezium. It is measured in squared units.
Formula for area of trapezium :
Area of trapezium = 1⁄2 × (sum of parallel sides) × height
Area for above trapezium = 1⁄2 × (a + b) × h
