In this section, we explore what is in the Royal Grammar School Guildford 11 Plus Test.
The admissions process for Year 7 entry in September 2026 is designed to identify academic potential and collaborative skills. Boys entering in 2026 will sit their entrance examinations in November 2025.
As stated in the Royal Grammar School Guildford Admissions Policy, the school uses a multi-faceted approach to evaluate candidates. This ensures that every boy is viewed as an individual, looking beyond just raw scores.
The ISEB Common Pre-Test
All registered candidates sit the ISEB common pre test in October or November 2025. This allows the school to benchmark applicants against national standards.
- This assessment is age-standardised to ensure fairness for summer-born children.
- It is a computer-based test completed at the candidate's current school or at RGS.
- The format is multiple-choice, allowing for efficient and adaptive testing.
The total duration is approximately two-and-a-quarter hours.
Subjects Tested
The ISEB assessment covers four distinct areas:
- 11+ English: Tests reading comprehension and grammar skills.
- 11+ Mathematics: Assesses curriculum knowledge and problem-solving.
- Verbal Reasoning: Evaluates logical thinking using language and vocabulary.
- Non-Verbal Reasoning: Tests the ability to analyze visual information and patterns.
No special preparation is required for these Common Pre-Tests.
Assessment Day Activities
In addition to the online test, boys are invited to an Assessment Day at the school in November 2025. This day includes a written task, a group activity, and a general interview.
The General Interview
Every candidate sits a short, general interview during this session.
- It is an informal conversation with a member of staff.
- The goal is to explore the boy's hobbies and outside interests.
- This helps settle nerves and allows his personality to shine through.
Creative Writing Task
Boys will complete a short composition or English creative writing task.
- This is distinct from the multiple-choice format of the pre-test.
- It assesses the ability to structure ideas and write engagingly.
- Teachers look for originality, vocabulary, and accurate punctuation.
Teamwork Activity
RGS values character highly. Boys participate in a teamwork task to tackle a series of challenges.
- This simulates a normal classroom setting for observers.
- It relies on effective collaboration and communication with peers.
- Staff assess how candidates contribute to group success, not just individual dominance.
The Second Interview
Following the November assessments, selected candidates may be invited back for a Second Interview in January 2026. This stage is typically used for scholarship assessments or borderline decisions.
- Invitations are sent to specific boys requiring further evaluation.
- It explores intellectual curiosity in greater depth than the general interview.
- The session tests how boys respond to questions they have not prepared for.
Parents should review PiAcademy’s 11+ Interview questions to help their child prepare for this conversational round.
