For Part B in question 30, there is much simpler way of working out.
1. Find the area of 2 opposite semicircles (3.5 * 2 = 7)
2. You will have two unshaded parts remaining. Subtract the total area of the 2 semicircles from the area of the square (9 -7) which is 2.
3. As the circles are identical, the two unshaded parts will be too. Therefore, one unshaded part is 1 square unit. 4 unshaded parts of 4 square units.
4. Subtract this from the total area of the square and you get 5 square units. This is the total area of the unshaded part.
Thank you for the reply and yes this is short and simple answer than on website… But we chose to write area for each leafy shaded part to explain it in more detail to students and to help them how to look at patterns in different ways for further questions which may come up in exam.
However, if the answer is taken in the shown case, the shaded part is 5.08 square units in total. This must mean that 2 shaded parts are 2.54 square units. And if the unshaded part of the semi-circle = 0.98 square units – according to the workings given – then the answer doesn’t tally up. The question states that each semi-circle has an area of 3.5 square units but with the website’s answer one semi-circle is 3.52 square units.
Hi Pradeepa, pls check it now, we have made changes to the explanation as per your comment.
