Finding a Grammar School for your child in Kent

If you’ve been researching high schools in Kent for your child, you will already know that you have a wide variety of options available.
In the UK education system, the majority of secondary schools are non-selective state schools (this majority are often referred to as the comprehensive system). However, there are other types of secondary schools out there, such as free schools and the independent school system.

Unlike state schools in England, both of these types of schools retain greater curricular independence from the UK government prescription, and this is seen as an educational advantage by many teachers and parents. The downside, however, is that most independent schools charge substantial fees, while any given free school might not suit your family’s location or educational needs. If you are therefore interested in a further alternative for your child, you might consider the grammar school system.

State grammar schools use a test known as the 11 Plus to assess pupils’ aptitude prior to admitting them. This selective process is strongly linked with enabling higher academic achievement in GCSEs and A-Levels among pupils attending grammar schools compared with those attending comprehensive schools.

There are only 163 grammar schools in England, and given their general reputation for high attainment, places at these institutions are in high demand. If your family are based in Kent, and you are curious to know more about how your child can attend a local grammar school, this article will look at Townley Grammar School for Girls, one of four grammar schools in the Council of Bexley.
