Bancroft’s School 11+ Exam Styles
- School plan to introduce a new, untaught, on-line aptitude component into school testing process. This will cover both verbal and non-verbal reasoning as well as some elements of maths and English.
- All candidates will sit these 3 papers on Friday 15 January 2021.
- ENGLISH
- All children are tested on reading, understanding and writing. The English paper last 45 minutes. It will cover the following:
- Reading and Understanding (25 minutes): The children are asked to read a passage or poem and answer questions on what they have read. Some questions call for longer answers and there may also be a few multiple choice questions. The answer book indicates the type of answer required. Questions test a variety of skills including: understanding of the vocabulary, sentence structure and implied meaning. There may be a longer question which asks the children to give their thoughts on a statement inspired by the text that they have read. They will be assessed here on the quality of their argument and the originality of their approach to the question.
- Writing (20 minutes. 5 minutes planning and 15 minutes writing): Children are given an essay title asking them to take some of the ideas from the passage or poem in the reading booklet and develop them into their own story or description.
- Marks are earned by writing relevantly and showing originality and accuracy; punctuation, spelling and grammar are all important here. They are also awarded for how well their answers are organised and how interesting they are.
- MATHEMATICS
- Candidates sit one paper, which lasts 45 minutes. A ruler and pencil will be needed, but not a calculator.
- Questions cover numeracy, problem solving and shape and space, and should be broadly accessible to children who are working towards level 5 at Key Stage Two. Questions are in increasing order of difficulty; some of the later questions may include elements from level 6 and include difficult, non-standard problems. We try to make these problems original yet accessible to mathematically talented children. Children should complete as much of the paper as they can.
- Candidates who do well in the written examination are invited for an interview.
- INTERVIEW
- Children who perform well in the examination are called back for interview; reports from current schools are taken into account.
- Members of our Senior School staff interview pairs of children. These interviews are primarily academic, and do not need any special preparation. It may be useful if children are able to talk about how they enjoy spending their time, and can describe any particular achievements or interests. We only interview children who have shown the potential to thrive at Bancroft’s in the examination.

1) Bancroft’s School Overview
Bancroft’s School is a co-educational independent school based in Woodford Green, London Borough of Redbridge. The school currently is an independent day school and has around 1,000 pupils aged between 7 and 18, around 200 of who are pupils of the Preparatory School and 800 of whom are pupils of the Senior School.
History of Bancroft’s School
Bancroft’s School was established in 1737 and was initially located in Mill End Road, London as a day school for boys only. Francis Bancroft, a wealthy businessman left his assets to the ‘Draper’s Company’ to establish a school for 100 poor boys in 1737, aged between 7-18 years old. In 1738 the first batch of boys was admitted. In 1977, 28 girls were admitted.
Outstanding GCSE and A-Level Results of Bancroft’s School
Bancroft’s school reports an excellent A-level and GCSE results for the academic year 2018.
In 2018 A-level results for Bancroft’s pupils are truly great. A-Level students achieved 36.2% at A*; 70% of exams taken were awarded either an A* or an A. Twenty nine pupils received 3 or more A*s.
In 2018 GCSE syllabus was changed and the new grading system is introduced in addition to the tougher exam. Bancroft’s school GCSE results are really amazing with 66% of all GCSEs taken were awarded the top grades of 9/8 or A*; 85.7% achieved either a 9/8/7/A*or A with 98.6% graded as a 5/B or better. Forty pupils from a cohort of 125 received nine or more 9/8/A*s.

- The Bancroft’s School 11 plus registration form is active on the School’s Website for you to enroll now.
- Please follow the instruction to fill in the registration form.
- Parents need to include the appropriate registration fees as mentioned below :
- A single non-returnable registration fee of £60 is required unless only applying for a Means Tested Award in which instance a reduced registration fee of £20 is payable.
- Cheques should be made payable to Bancroft’s School. A copy of the child’s full birth certificate must accompany all applications
- The closing dates for registration of the 11 plus examinations are 1st December 2018, for September ’19.
- Saturday, 12th January is the date for appearing the entrance for the Bancroft’s School 11 plus admissions.
- A £400 deposit is payable on acceptance of a place in the school; this sum is credited to the student’s final account.
This is followed by an interview process scheduled in the months January/February 2021.
Entry Requirements
Entry at 11+ into year 7 is on the basis of performance in an entrance exam and an interview. The registration process for Bancroft’s School 11 plus is not to make the process academically challenging but to provide a ground where students can be offered the correct choice for education. The process involves an entrance exam followed by an interview process. A student in the waiting list will be offered a chance in case of vacancies.
11 Plus Entrance Exam Format
Children will be required to appear two tests, namely- Mathematics and English. English includes testing a pupil’s comprehension and writing skills in particular. Special scholarship papers are not available, although a student might access the Bancroft’s School 11 plus sample papers from the school website.
All children take two English tests. Sample papers are there for mathematics and English both. Students may find the papers relevant during exam prep.
English
Paper 1: Reading and Understanding (45 Minutes)
Firstly the student will take up an English test which is a 45 minutes paper testing a student’s reading comprehension skills via long answers and multiple choice answer type questions. Understanding vocabulary strength and inference based reasoning are including in this test.
Paper 2: Writing (5 Minutes planning + 15 Minutes writing)
The second is an essay test that demands a 5-minute planning process followed by essay construction on a topic specified in the question sheet. Pupil’s originality and accuracy of writing are measured in this test. Children are given an essay title for extracting ideas from the excerpt or poem in the reading handout and develop them into a story or a description of their own.
Punctuation, spelling, and grammar are all important here. They are also evaluated on how well the essay is articulated and how captivating the content is.
Mathematics
The Mathematics paper is a 75-minute paper where students are asked to finish 2 sections. The students are advised to carry a ruler, protractor, and a set of HB pencils with an eraser. The first section of the test contains about thirty questions with increasing order of difficulty as per the 11 plus exam format.
This section includes numeracy, problem statements solving shape and space, and should be widely available to students preparing for Stage Two and Level 5. The later questions in this section may include portions from Level 6 as well.
3) Interview Process After 11 plus Exam
The candidates who have appeared for the written examination and have secured the vital scores are eligible for the interview process. Bancroft’s school will be contacting current schools for student’s current school report but only for those candidates invited back to interview.
The members of the Senior School Staff conduct and administer the interview process for pairs of children. So the interviews are only conducted in the light of an academic focus and do not require any special preparation or coaching by the pupil.

5) 11 Plus Bursaries and scholarships at Bancroft’s School for 11 Plus Exam:
- Academic Scholarships
The final section of this examination contains more complex and challenging set of problem questions. Students need not score high in this section. The problems in this part are realistic and accessible to mathematically talented children. Children are instructed not to attempt questions in this section until they have completed the most in section A (which is the first section).
