  • Registration for entry in 2023 is now closed. You can register for entry in 2024 here.
  • For those considering 11+ entry, the Entrance Exam takes place on Tuesday 9 January 2024, and boys must be registered by 30 November of the year preceding entry.
  • On the day of the Entrance Exam, the boys will usually sit 3 papers in English (80 minutes), Maths (60 minutes) and Verbal Reasoning (60 minutes) and also have a short interview with some of our senior members of staff. We feel it is important to talk to our candidates before we know their exam results in order not to bring preconceptions to the interview. Candidates who have shown promise on the day of the Entrance Exam are invited back to the second round at the end of January. During this morning, boys will spend a couple of hours with us in group activities whilst parents are invited to a talk from the Headmaster and a further tour of the School. Offers will be made in mid-February, in conjunction with the dates set out by the North London Consortium.
  • Normally up to 72 boys are admitted annually at 11+. In order to avoid exceeding our available capacity, in addition to firm offers made, we may also maintain a reserve list for a limited period, to whom offers may be made if places become available.

St Albans School 12+, 13+ Exam Styles

  • 12+In the June of Year 7, we provide a 12+ preliminary assessment for boys for whom St Albans School is their first choice. This is recommended for boys who are not considering other schools, as a substantial reservation fee is requested before the results of the other Schools’ competitive entry tests are known. The assessment consists of exams in English, Maths, a Verbal Reasoning test and a number of short group interviews. Specimen English and Maths papers are available in the adjacent section. On the basis of this assessment, we may offer a place for entry into Third Form the following September. Alternatively, we may suggest a further attempt at entry via the competitive Entrance Examination at the end of January/beginning of February, or suggest that the candidate and his parents reconsider their choice of school in consultation with the Head of the Prep School.
  • 13+Please note that 13+ candidates are only required to sit papers in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning, along with interviews. The procedure for the combined 13+ Entrance and Scholarship examinations remains unchanged.

COMBINED ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP AND COMPETITIVE ENTRANCE EXAM

Those candidates wishing to be considered for Scholarships, regardless of whether they already hold an offer following the 12+ Preliminary Assessment, sit papers over three days at the end of the January prior to entry. Boys wishing to enter the School at 13+ the following September without attempting the Scholarship, who have not secured a conditional place prior to this within the Preliminary Assessments, will sit a selection of the same exams (over a two-day period) but are not in direct competition with the Scholarship candidates. These exams take place during the final week of January.

For boys sitting the 13+ exams in January, registrations must be received by the deadline of 30 November of the year preceding entry.
