Alphabet codes are like a puzzle in which all alphabets mentioned in the question will have some value assigned to them. In some questions, you need to figure out the alphabet’s value or you will be asked to figure out the value of a word made up of those alphabets.
As you would solve a puzzle by using clues similarly you will use the clues given in the question to figure out the solution to the alphabet codes puzzle.
Example 1:
The letters of the alphabet are assigned number values: A = 2, B = 4, C = 6, and so on. The value of a word is found by adding the value of the letters. What is the value of the word ‘MATH’?
Solution:
As, A is the first alphabet, its value is 2 (2 × 1).
B is the second alphabet, its value is 4 (2 × 2).
C is the third alphabet, its value is 6 (2 × 3).
Similarly,
M is the 13th alphabet, its value is 2 × 13 = 26
T is the 20th alphabet, its value is 2 × 20 = 40
H is the 8th alphabet, its value is 2 × 8 = 16
Value of word MATH = 26 + 2 + 40 + 16 = 94
Example 2:
The cards below have letters on one side, and the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 on the other side (but not necessarily in this order on the cards).
You are told that :
Solution:
The question says,
T + U + B + E + L + I + G + H + T = 38
Also T, U, B, E, L, I, G, H has numbers 1 to 8 so
T + U + B + E + L + I + G + H = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 = 36
If we look closely over these two equations, we can solve for T like this:
(T + U + B + E + L + I + G + H ) + T = 38
36 + T = 38
T = 38 - 36
Example 3:
The cards below have letters on one side, and the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 on the other side (but not necessarily in this order on the cards).
You are told that:
You are also told that:
Solution:
[Add up the numbers given in the question and then solve accordingly]
S + T + R + A + T = 16
2T + S + R + A = 16
S + R + A = 16 - 2T …equation 1.
But,
S + T + R + A + I + G + H + T = 33,
And
S + T + R + A + I + G + H = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 28
So, T = 33 - 28 = 5 (using both the equations above)
Putting the value of T in equation 1, we get,
S + R + A = 16 - 2T = 16 - 2 × 5 = 16 - 10 = 6
Hence, S, R, A must be from 1, 2 and 3.
Then G, H, and I must be from 4, 6, and 7.
G + H + I + T = 17 + 5 = 22
Answer is 22.
