Directions are guides which help to move from one place to another.
Anticlockwise and clockwise are ways to show the direction of a turn.
Clockwise: Clockwise direction means moving in the direction of the hands of a clock. You will observe the clockwise direction motion while closing taps, tightening screws, etc.
The above arrow shows a clockwise direction.
Anticlockwise: Anticlockwise direction means moving in the opposite direction of the hands of a clock. Angles are always measured using a protractor from 0 degrees in an anticlockwise direction.
The arrow above shows anticlockwise direction.
A compass has four main directions North (N), South (S), East (E) and West (W).
There are 90 degrees between N and E, E and S, S and W, W and N.
These four main directions are further divided into eight compass directions as shown below.
Northeast (NE) - Halfway between North and East.
Angle between N and NE = Angle between NE and N = 45 degrees
Southeast (SE) - Halfway between East and South.
Angle between E and SE = Angle between SE and S = 45 degrees
Southwest (SW) - Halfway between South and West.
Angle between S and SW = Angle between SW and W = 45 degrees
Northwest (NW) - Halfway between West and North.
Angle between W and NW = Angle between NW and N = 45 degrees
Example 1: Steve is facing East. He turns 225° in an anticlockwise direction. Which direction is Steve facing now?
Solution:
Angle from East to North = 90°
Angle from East to West = 90° + 90° = 180°
Angle from East to Southwest = 180° + 45° = 225°
Steve is facing Southwest.
Example 2: Eric is facing North. How many degrees would he need to turn, clockwise, to face Southeast?
Solution:
From clockwise.
Angle from Northwest to North = 45°
Angle from Northwest to East = 45° + 90° = 135°
Angle from Northwest to South= 135° + 90° = 225°
Angle from Northwest to Southwest = 225° + 45° = 270°
Eric needs to turn 270° clockwise to face Southeast.
