Ease Out Problems Using Unitary Method In 11 Plus Exams.

1. What is the Unitary Method?

The unitary method is one of the simplest ways to ease out word problems, especially problems based on ratio and proportions. As the name suggests itself, the unitary method involves working out the value of one unit using the information provided in the problem. Using this value, you can work out the value of the required number of units.

The unitary method is also known as the method of ones.

For example - If the cost of four boxes of cupcakes is 

£20, work out the cost of ten boxes of cupcakes.

Solution:

Cost of four boxes of cupcakes = £20.

Cost of one box of cupcakes = £20 ÷ 4 = £5

Cost of ten boxes of cupcakes = 10 × £5 = £50

1.1 How to use unitary method?

Steps to use the Unitary method in word problems:

  1. Work out the value of one unit, using the value of multiple units by dividing.
  2. To get the value of more units, Multiply.
  3. To get the value of fewer units, Divide.

Let us now use the above steps to solve 11 Plus exam-style word problems.

1.2 Solved Examples on Unitary Method

a) A jet is flying at a speed of 30 km/hr. How much distance will it cover in 3 hours?

Solution:

Distance covered in 1 hour = 30km/hr.

As we know to get the value of more units, we multiply.

So, distance covered in 3 hours = 3 × 30 = 90km/hr.

b) If 25 men can do work in 4 days. In how many days can 10 men do the same work?

Solution:

If 25 men can do work in 4 days. 

1 man can do work in 25 × 4=100 days.

So, 10 men can do work in 100 ÷ 10=10 days
