Money conversions are used in day-to-day life. It is one of the important topics of the 11-plus exam. The main currencies used in UK are pounds and pence.
Converting Units:
Example: Convert 450p in pounds.
Solution: Relation between pounds (£) and pence (p) is £ 1 = 100p
So 450p = 450 ÷ 100 = £4.5
Example: A comic book costs £9.56. How much change will you get in pence if you pay £10?
Solution: Cost of comic book = £9.56
Money paid = £10
Change = Money paid - Cost of comic book
= £10 - £9.56
= £0.44
You need to convert £0.44 in pence.
Relation between pounds (£) and pence (p) is £ 1 = 100p
So £0.44 = 0.44 × 100 = 44p
Change in pence = 44p
Exchanges rates are used while converting money from one currency to another. It tells us about how much 1 unit of some currency is equal to. For example if you are visiting abroad, how many pounds you will get for unit of foreign currency is determined by the exchange rate.
Different countries have different currencies and their symbols with different exchange rates.
Examples of some currencies:
Let us now see work out a problem on exchange rate using unit conversion.
On a trip to France, I found out that one English pound was worth 1.2 Euros.
a) A ticket for a water park in France costs 18 Euros. How much is this in English pounds?
Solution: One English pound is worth 1.2 Euros.
So £1 = €1.2
Cost of ticket = €18
Converting €18 to pounds,
€18 = 18 ÷ 1.2 = £15
Hence 18 Euros is 15 pounds.
b) On a ferry to France, I wanted to buy a pack of candies, which costs £6. How many Euros would I have to pay for it?
Solution: One English pound is worth 1.2 Euros.
So £1 = €1.2
Cost of pack of candies = £6
Converting £6 to Euros,
£6 = 6 × 1.2 = €7.2
Hence £6 is 7.2 Euros.
